To My Dearest Gwendolyn on your Birthday

My Dearest, Gwendolyn Sue,

A year ago, I was patiently waiting to welcome you into this world. At 10:00 AM on August 8, I heard your sweet cries for the very first time. It was like music to my ears – one of the sweetest sounds. And, then I saw your beautiful face for the first time and my heart instantly filled with love as the tears streamed down my face. It was a moment that I had dreamed about since I found out you existed. It was a moment I had played over and over in my head and yet I was not prepared for the amount of love I would feel in that instant. One year ago, I breathed the biggest sigh of relief. One year ago, I spent the entire night just staring at your sweet face, your tiny fingers, your adorable toes, your button nose and your precious little lips. One year ago, you made my heart whole.

It is hard for me to comprehend that it’s time to celebrate your first birthday.  This past year has been nothing short of amazing. You went from being a teeny tiny baby to a very intelligent and high spirited little one year old in the blink of an eye. You went from being a newborn who spent hours at a time cuddling in my arms to a walking and talking child who won’t sit still! You went from knowing only the love and comfort of your loved ones' arms to being able to explore the world around you on your own (while someone walks right behind you!). I blinked and you became a toddler.

Everything about you is addicting – I can never seem to get enough of you. Every time I look at you, I smile. You are such a happy little girl and you have a smile that just lights up an entire room. You are a genuine sweetheart and when you wrap your little hands around my neck or lay your head on my shoulder, I feel my heart instantly warm inside me.  It is hard to put this into words because it’s a feeling I just can’t quite describe. But, you and I have a connection. I don’t know if it’s because you are my second child, because you are probably my last, because you are a girl, because you are my rainbow baby, or a combination of all of the above. There is something about you that draws me in. I feel like you are my kindred spirit. It’s an amazing feeling and I thank you for making me whole.

You are hilarious. And, you know it. You make the silliest faces and when we laugh or smile, you do it again! The girl of a thousand faces is what I call you. The noises that come out of your mouth crack us all up and you continue to make them once you get a laugh from us. Everyone is drawn to you because of your personality – you are definitely one of a kind! You certainly make life more enjoyable.

You are laid back, but also very determined and know what you want. You are a SMART little girl. I am so impressed by how quickly you learn something. You will try and try again until you have it figured out.  I could just watch you for hours because I can see the wheels turning in that head of yours! You repeat things and mimic everything. You are also very independent. You definitely like to be in someone's arms/near someone, but you are so good at playing independently. You will  read your books or play with your toys (or Jameson's toys!) all by yourself for long periods of time.

I have no doubt that you will go far in life...and, that my dear, is what I hope for you. I hope that you have every ounce of confidence in yourself to be who you want to be. I hope that you have the courage to follow your dreams and goals and the determination to never give up on them. I hope that you live your life with a kind and compassionate heart and always respect yourself and others. I pray that you live a life overflowing with happiness and love.

I hope you know that today and always, I am here for you. I will support you and lift you up when you need it the most. I promise to always listen with an open mind. I promise to be your hand to hold and your shoulder to lean on. Whenever you doubt yourself or the world around you, I hope that you turn to me for support and guidance. Most importantly, I will never let a day go by without telling and showing you just how much I love you and how much you mean to me and this family.

Happy first birthday, my sweet little rainbow. You are loved beyond measure. To the moon and back.

Thank you Sarah Rogers Photography for capturing this picture!

7 Months!

Being that February is a short month, I get why it seemed to go fast, but sheesh, slow down a little!!
  • By far my favorite new thing this month - The Scrunch Face! It is so freaking adorable and I just want to gobble you up when you do it! The best part is you will do it on cue. Love.
  • You have started saying Babababababa. It's so hilarious! We like to joke and call you a Purple Minion because sometimes you just let out these "BAs" that sound like the minions! Jameson thinks it's hilarious!
  • You also say Momomomomomomom, but usually only when you are upset!
  • You also say "mmmmm", but it's more like a yell/squeal!
  • You are really just pretty noisy in general! You definitely like to be heard! I remember Jameson being the same way - it's really pretty cute!
  • Your sleeping is so erratic. Some nights, you will wake up crying out of nowhere, but you don't really wake up. We can pick you up and you typically just fall right back into a deep sleep. You don't really ever need to eat, but I do resort to that if we can't figure out how to calm you down! You are also back to the basement parties with Daddy before bed some nights because you just don't want to give in and go to sleep!
  • You are still taking your nightly catnap from about 7-7:45 with Daddy. I think he loves that time, too!
  • You are still swaddled, but you pretty much always break free and roll over on your side. It's funny because we will lay you on your back and you instantly roll to your side - it's like there is a magnet pulling you over!
  • We had to take you to the doc on Valentine's Day for a cough, runny nose and a mild ear infection. I know doctors say there is no connection between sickness and teething but I can't help but disagree! Every time your brother had a tooth come through, he had an ear infection/runny nose! You didn't seem sick besides the barky cough, so Daddy and I wanted to make sure you were OK! I was surprised to learn you just had a slightly red ear and that was all...thought for sure it was croup! Your brother was the one with croup!
  • I called it last month - you now know how to clap and do it all of the time! I knew you were close! You get so happy when you do it and it's adorable!
  • You are such a good baby and that is so helpful when we go places. I never have to worry about taking you on errands or anything. You just love to look around and take it all in!
  • You are definitely in the phase where you want to be held most of the time. You get upset with me when I try to put you down! Other times you are perfectly fine sitting, but you don't like when people get too far out of your line of sight!
  • You are also in that phase where if we take something away from you, you get mad!
  • We started Kindermusik and you just love it!! I love being able to share it with you. You just light up when we dance and sing and you definitely have the music in your bones (Mrs. Henderson even commented on that). But, that whole not liking when we take stuff away thing is very apparent in class when we have to put away the instruments!!
  • We introduced Puffs to you and you LOVE them! Especially the sweet potato ones. You tried apples, bananas, prunes - all of which you loved. You were not so fond of the green beans or peas. However, it got better after a few days of trying. We also started putting bananas in the mesh feeder and let you feed yourself - you love it! It's a mess for sure, but you do a great job and it keeps you busy while we eat!
  • You get super excited when you see a bottle or when I sit in the recliner to get ready to nurse. It's pretty funny and sometimes I feel like you are going to fly away with as excited as you get.
  • You are drinking water out of a sippy now. You are a pro!
  • You move your hands a lot. I joked about how you were constantly moving in my tummy when I was pregnant and you just have not slowed down one bit! Something on you is always moving, but that hand sure flails around a lot!
  • You LOVE to jump. It goes with what I just said about constantly moving. If you aren't in the jumperoo, you will just jump when people are holding you. It's hilarious...and exhausting!
  • You have your mouth open a lot now when you are doing things. It's pretty funny and you look like a baby bird!
  • You especially look like a baby bird when we feed you. You just wait with your mouth open!
  • You are just a goof ball - you are constantly cracking me up! Your noises, your facial expressions, your movements...it all cracks us up and I just can't get enough of you!
  • You do this head tilt thing and it's super adorable. Daddy started doing it to you at the dinner table since he is across from you, so now you do it all of the time and then he does it and then you do it and so on and so forth :). Adorable.
  • You seem to prefer things in your left hand, but I also remember Jameson doing that, too, and he eventually switched to the right hand.
  • You also can't seem to figure out how to pick up something and hold it when you already have something in your hand. You will drop the thing in your hand to get the other thing. It's not always, so I don't think it will be long before you have the hang of it!
  • You can put the shapes in the container and take them out! Jameson would play with those for long periods of time and it looks like you will be the same way!
  • We had Beckett's birthday party and you were such a good girl! You were cute as a button as usual! And, you showed off your clapping skills!
  • You also got to go to Miss Madison's birthday party and you had a blast! You were so good the whole time and just watched and played.
  • You have started grabbing your feet when you are laying down - too cute! You will also occasionally suck on your little piggies!
  • You love to chew on Sophie - we think some teeth are working their way out.
  • You finally rolled from tummy to back (March 3).
  • You love to be startled for some reason!
  • You love when people make kissy noises at you!
  • You can stand up against your Leap Frog table. You have to be leaning against it and we still have to be right there in case you start to fall, but you will be doing it on your own in no time.
  • The days of leaving you unattended for even a split second on the changing table are over. You try to get up now!
  • You still love to "read" through books. So cute!
  • You also still love bath time as well! You prefer to sit up in your little tub, but you also like to lean back and play with the running water! You love to listen to the music with Daddy still!
  • You and Jameson continue to be buddies. I love watching you two interact. It's the best - so heartwarming!! Love you both to the moon and back!
